Objects from former East Berlin interior
Gallery M was built in what was then East Germany, but was never taken into use. The first exhibition after the fall of the Berlin Wall was “Le Cadavre Repris” a European exhibition in which Pierre Mertens participated with a square meter of painted door. In the spirit of the surrealists, each artist made a work of one square meter and presented it next to each other without knowing what the others would do.
He stayed in the apartment of a gallery employee and placed a piece of her poor East Berlin interior in the gallery.
Pierre Mertens later curated a presentation of LE CADAVRE REPRIS in Antwerp together with Flor Bex.
