‘Wedbos Geel’ is an art integration project for the new retirement home in or Geel. (2010-2011)
Geel has been known for his home care for psychiatric patients for more than 100 years. The former foster parents and their guests come together again in the retirement home.
Pierre Mertens went with the elderly to a mirror tent where a carnival party of the psychiatric institute took place. Local photographers captured the party and this material was the starting point for various works of art throughout the building. 3 mosaics show two ex-foster parents and a psychiatric guest. The photos of the foster parents contain hands and those of the guest a report of the party. ‘Hearing signs’ is a work with wooden hands that represent this text in sign language. Hands of four generations form a color jump in the quiet space. Other photos were processed in wall hangings.
