{"id":2932,"date":"2020-09-09T15:58:02","date_gmt":"2020-09-09T13:58:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chv.ipd.mybluehost.me\/werken\/418-portraits-of-children\/"},"modified":"2021-09-10T12:16:18","modified_gmt":"2021-09-10T10:16:18","slug":"418-loving-care","status":"publish","type":"werken","link":"http:\/\/pierremertens.be\/en\/works\/418-loving-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Portraits of Children (2020)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In October 2020,\u00a0<strong>Pierre Mertens<\/strong>\u00a0and curator\u00a0<strong>Edith Doove<\/strong>\u00a0made a first presentation of his recent paintings under the name &#8216;Loving Care&#8217; in the Blikfabriek, Antwerp (B). Now they is looking for a suitable place to show this work within the international art environment.<\/p>\n<p>For this series of 12 portraits, he now comes back to classical painting that he had abandoned since the 1970\u2019s, because in his view only painting creates the right distance to look at this suffering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Standard\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">He started from photos of their child with untreated hydrocephalus that Filipino mothers posted on Facebook. Although the big heads are confrontational, Pierre Mertens paints these children seen through the eyes of these caring mothers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Standard\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">He opts for a large format (2m x 1.5m), transferring these loving snapshots into paintings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Standard\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">With this series, he draws attention to a gigantic global health problem that remains underexposed but affects 1 million children worldwide every year. 80% in developing countries where the vast majority have no access to health care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The visual artist and the activist Pierre Mertens meet again in this series.
